More About Antisemitism

In 2023, there was a significant increase in hate crimes globally and here in the United States. While Jewish people account for 2.4% of the U.S. population, antisemitic hate crimes increased by 337%. In June of 2023, we reached out to Lizzy to speak to our community. At that time we were deeply concerned about the rise in antisemitism, but we had no idea what was to come in the aftermath of October 7th. Our community has been affected in ways we never imagined and our young Jewish children are among the targets.

On Saturday morning December 16th, 2023, as our Hebrew School children gathered in their synagogue for a special service they'd been preparing to lead for weeks, they were forced to evacuate due to a bomb threat. Sadly, this was not the first but one of dozens of incidents over the last few years to rattle local Jewish organizations. There have been numerous issues at our schools, one in particular involving the unimaginable harassment of a Jewish middle school student. This girl was repeatedly harassed with Heil Hitler salutes, swastikas scrawled on her desk, red ink depicted as blood on the swastikas, and exposure to her perpetrators even after pledges were made by the school to keep her insulated from them. A recent settlement reached between Red Clay School District and the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights is now part of the U.S. Department's national standard on how to handle antisemitism and discrimination in our public schools.

The demand for security at our Jewish organizations has created a situation where our resources are stretched just to keep us safe.

In the wake of this darkness, we felt there was a significant opportunity to be the LIGHT. We are honored for you to be a part of our Spring Soiree to provide education, insight, and support to our Delaware community and the surrounding areas.

We may be small, but we are mighty!

“History teaches that hate never fully goes away; it only hides until it is given just a little oxygen. That is why we must confront antisemitism early and aggressively whenever and wherever it emerges from the darkness. Protecting the Jewish community from antisemitism is essential to our broader fight against all forms of hate, bigotry, and bias..”

--White House U.S. National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism

If you or someone you know has experienced a hate crime, we urge you to report it today.
